Bow season a success in Albany

The 2012-2013 bow hunting season ended for the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany hunters and it has been deemed a success. The Albany, New York, season began on September 18, 2012 and went until January 15.

Any hunters looking for extra protection for their vehicles while out on the hunt should consider Husky Liners® mud guards

More than 100 archers scoured nearly 1,100 acres of upstate New York, according to Jule Robbins, natural resources manager, Environmental Branch, Installation and Environment Divisions, MCLB Albany.

“The average buck harvested was larger this year compared to the 2011 deer season,” Robbins added. “Hunters also reported seeing less disparity in the doe-to-buck ratio. Equal sex ratios helped to ensure a healthy deer density, which improved the hunter's opportunity to encounter more mature bucks.”

The archers harvested 35 does and 8 bucks this year, slightly down from the quota of 39 does and 16 bucks, but the season was nonetheless a success.

Another hunter in Yancey County, North Carolina, showed why it's worth hunting on the last day of the season.

Rusty Pittman in the last hour of the last day harvested a nine point buck that the Charlotte Observer reported was "nearly symmetrical."

Best used cars for under $8,000

The winter is usually a slower time of year for new car buying, as many potential buyers looked to take advantage of year-end deals offered by new car dealers. However, the winter is an especially good time of year to purchase a used car.

As many Americans are scouring auto websites to find the best deals around, Kelley Blue Book thought it would help out by releasing its list of the 10 Best Used Cars Under $8,000. As potential car buyers look to make the most out of their money in 2013, KBB says that there is no better time than now to purchase a used car, as models are more reliable and last longer than they ever have in the past.

"To come up with this handy list of top used cars, first we compiled all the used cars from 2003 and newer with a Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value of less than $8,000 as of January 2013," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book 's KBB.com. "Then we went through the list and handpicked the 10 standouts with the most appealing mixes of reliability and desirability. The vehicles on our short list offer incredible value for today's budget-conscious car shopper."

The KBB list of the 10 Best Used Cars Under $8,000 includes the 2003 Acura TL, 2004 Honda Odyssey, 2005 Volvo S60, 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab and 2011 Hyundai Accent. Experts at KBB chose the above models for their reliability and overall bang for their buck.

Any current or potential car owners looking to extend the life of their vehicle should consider equipping it with Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats.

Those in the market for an SUV might want to consider a 2008 Misubishi Outlander or 2010 Toyota RAV4 as Consumer reports recently named those vehicles among the best deals on  used SUV.

KBB releases list of the 10 best cars for winter

As we roll into the dead of winter, car owners need to be doing what they can to safeguard their vehicle from the inclement weather thrown at them during this time of year. Sometimes that means buying a whole new car altogether. Kelley Blue book recently released its list of the 10 Best Cars for the Winter, highlighting the top models in the industry for dealing with rain, sleet, snow and whatever else the cold months throw at us.

Driving in the winter months is often most dangerous as stopping distances are shorter on what are usually wet roads, there is less visibility and it is darker outside for longer periods of time. With that being said, KBB has hand picked the top 2013 models they believe handle these conditions the best.

"Whether your daily commute involves difficult winter-weather driving conditions or you live for weekends on the slopes, KBB.com's list of the 10 Best Cars for Winter highlights our picks for the top snow- and ski-ready new-vehicle standouts," said Jack Nerad , executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book 's KBB.com. "Certainly, the availability of robust all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive systems is part of the overall equation, but each of the vehicles on our list also possesses a variety of other attributes that make it an excellent choice to negotiate winter weather."

Whether you get a new car or not for the winter driving months, it is also a good idea to put Husky Liners® vehicle floor mats inside the car to protect it from damaging moisture.

One car on the list is the Audi Allroad, which contains all-wheel drive and extra ground clearance with a lower center of gravity to roll right through the snow with no problems. Another car on the list is the Subaru Outback, which offers all wheel drive on a sedan-like car with SUV-like cargo room. In addition, the experts at KBB said the Ford Fusion was a top pick in the winter as it also offers all-wheel drive and provides visibility like an SUV.

Some cars also named Top Safety Pick+

The Ford Fusion and the Subaru Outback were also named Top Safey Pick+ vehicles by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This designation adds an extra test to the already coveted Top Safety Pick title, making them some of the safest vehicles in all the land. So it is no surprise that they are also featured on KBB's list of the 10 Best Cars for Winter.

Hybrids competing with the rest of the auto industry

It took decades, but the hybrid vehicle market is finally gaining ground on other mainstream segments.

WardsAuto has been tracking the numbers since hybrids came to the market in 1999. Wards recently reported that U.S. consumers bought 427,605 hybrids in 2012, up from 261,507 in 2011. What could be considered just as amazing, hybrids also outsold a number of other segments including midsize luxury cars, small cross/utility vehicles and each of the three SUV segments.

According to the report, General Motors, Ford, Honda, BMW, Hyundai and Mercedes all recently entered the hybrid market and soon Acura, Infiniti, Honda, Nissan and Subaru will follow. There is even a Rolls-Royce hybrid on the market and Toyota is looking to offer a hybrid version of every car in its lineup.

According to a separate study titled Auto Industry Sets Sights on Alternative Power conducted by Thomson Reuters, alternative-power related patents increased in 2011 by 182 percent compared to 2006, showing how much research and development automakers are putting into these types of technologies.

"With stringent new fuel economy standards introduced in the U.S. that require global auto manufacturers to double their average mileage requirements, car companies have gotten very serious about alternative power," said Bob Stembridge , an intellectual property analyst at Thomson Reuters and author of the report. "The aggressive R&D efforts of some of the leading manufacturers suggest that consumer options for alternative power will grow considerably in the coming decade."

The report showed that Toyota accounted for 1,901 inventions, leading the industry, and it was followed by Honda, which had 587 inventions.

Whether you own a fuel efficient hybrid or a gas guzzling truck, any car owner should equip their car with Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats to keep their interiors looking spick and span.

Green Car Journal's Green Car Technology Award

The Washington Auto Show on January 31 will feature the latest innovations in the auto industry that are looking to make the environment more sustainable.

"Presenting the very latest in thinking, technology, design, innovation, alternative fuel solutions, automotive safety and state-of-the-art prototypes, The Washington Auto Show is a global consortium of power, exploration and automotive frontiers that can only be assembled in Washington D.C. – and one you can't afford to miss," reads the Washington Auto Show's website. "The Advanced Technology SuperHighway Café will house the latest innovations in safety and sustainability and advanced technology. A guest lounge with computer kiosks will enable visitors to access floor plans and interactive presentations of many of the technology systems on display."

Earlier this month, finalists for the Green Car Journal's inaugural Green Car Technology Award were announced. One winner will be named on the second day of the Washington Auto Show, based on the 10 technologies that have been nominated. According to event officials, the vehicle with the best technology that strives for a new generation in fuel efficiency, alternative fuel or low emissions will win the award.

"The 'green' technologies that make possible achieving ever-higher efficiencies and lower environmental impact are often the unsung heroes of the automotive world," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. "Whether employed in alternative fuel or conventionally powered vehicles, these technologies work in their own ways toward bringing us more environmentally positive transportation without sacrificing the functionality and driving enjoyment we expect from our vehicles."

Some of the technologies that were nominated for the Green Car Technology Award include Ford's Auto Stop-Start which shuts hybrids off when they are stopped and automatically turns them on when in order to save on fuel. Another is the Nissan Easy-Fill Tire Alert which lets owners know how much air their tires need.

Toyota to show off American accomplishments

Toyota recently announced that its theme for the 2013 Chicago Auto Show will focus on the automaker's success in America, as it secured multiple awards for its fleet of vehicles and rebounded sales numbers.

The automaker will be showcasing various concept cars at the event that will give the public a look at where the brand plans on going in the next few years. Another vehicle that will appear at the show is the Toyota Avalon, which will be mounted on a platform made of 5,000 pieces of glass. The automaker will also feature a virtual reality experience for event-goers, giving them a glimpse of what its like to drive around in an Avalon.

"Chicago has long been considered one of the top drawing consumer auto shows in the country," said Brent Marrero , auto show planner for Toyota Motor Sales. "This year, we wanted the exhibit to not only showcase our incredible products but also our heritage in the United States. We know that 'made in America' is especially important to people living in the Midwest, and we feel we have a great story to tell, with 70 percent of all our vehicles sold in the U.S. being built here as well."

Toyota has best resale value

Toyota received various awards for its safety and reliability this past year. Recently, Kelley Blue Book said that Toyota was the most likely brand to hold its resale value, while Lexus was the most likely luxury automaker to hold its value. Any auto owners looking to preserve the resale value of their car should install Husky Liners® vehicle floor mats, keeping their interior looking as clean as the day they pulled of the lot.

“The competition for Best Resale Value within many segments has become very heated in the last few years, as major vehicle redesigns and new model introductions have challenged the traditional favorites,” said Eric Ibara, director of residual consulting for Kelley Blue Book.. “However, for the second year in a row, Toyota and Lexus retain the top Best Resale Value ranking for both non-luxury and luxury brands, based on the average 60-month residual value across all models in each brands' respective lineup. Combined, there is an impressive total of 12 Toyota and Lexus models bringing home 2013 Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards this year; half of the Top 10 models with Best Resale Value for 2013 hail from either Toyota or Lexus.”

Auto industry experiencing strong start to 2013

According to a report by LMC Automotive and J.D. Power and Associates, after having a strong sales year last year, the automotive industry is expected to grow even further, as January numbers are already better than experts initially anticipated.

The report expects January sales will reach 812,000 vehicles in 2013 or a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 12.9 million units. That's well above the 12.4 million unit seasonally adjusted annualized rate both groups expected going into the month. LMC Automotive has raised its sales forecast for the year by 100,000 units to a seasonally adjusted annualize rate of 15.1 million.

LMC Automotive has increased its sales forecast for the year by 100,000 units after finding out the year is off to such a good start. The group's predictions translate to a seasonally adjusted annualize rate of 15.1 million.

According to the joint report, the auto industry's light vehicle production averaged 15.4 million units last year, up 18 percent from 2011. Americans poured into new car dealers in such high numbers, primarily because the cars were once again affordable after the recession took hold and demand has since been pent up for cars.

"Demand remained strong throughout the year as the average light vehicle age reached 11 years (a record high), the share of subprime loans grew to ease credit availability and the economic scenario improved," said Mike Hanley, global automotive leader at Ernst & Young. "Vehicle sales got another boost toward the year end, as customers rushed to replace their damaged vehicles in the aftermath of the Superstorm Sandy."

Preserving a car's resale value

A Consumer Reports study last year showed that you could save $30,000, on a 15-year-old car with 200,000 miles on it, instead of trading it in for a new car every five years.

One of the best ways to preserve a car's resale value is to install Husky Liners® vehicle floor mats. These mats keep cars' carpets untouched by any moisture or damage.

"Most people focus on the purchase price, the reality is a car is a depreciating asset, it's worth less with each passing day," said Jeff Bartlett, auto editor at Consumer Reports. "And, it depreciates more when it's relatively new. You want to pick a car that's not only going to meet your needs today, but is built to adjust to your lifestyle in the years ahead."

In addition to custom fit floor mats, the user manual will offer helpful tips on maintaining the life of a vehicle.

Worst maintenance mistakes made by car owners

Most car owners know that caring for their vehicle is not only essential to keeping themselves and passengers safe behind the wheel, but it is always cheaper in the long run to periodically maintain a vehicle than having to do repairs later on.

CarMD.com and its Auto Service Excellence-certified Master Technicians, which have more than 840 years of experience working on cars, recently released their list of the top 10 maintenance mistakes cars owners make. The No. 1 mistake owners make is putting off recommended or scheduled maintenance.

The mistakes continue in the order they appear on the list including, ignoring the "check engine" light, not changing the oil, or not having it changed on time, not checking tire pressure, neglecting coolant, brake, transmission and other fluid services. Other issues included continuing to drive when the vehicle is overheating, not changing fuel and air filters, having unqualified shops service your vehicle, using generic aftermarket parts instead of original equipment manufacturer-quality parts and trying to service your own high-tech vehicle.

In addition to making sure they do not make the above mistakes, auto owners are also encouraged to install Husky Liners® mud guards to provide extra protection to the exterior of their car.

"When consumers fail to properly maintain their vehicles, the resulting repair costs dwarf the money that could have been budgeted to maintain their car," said Art Jacobsen, vice president, CarMD.com Corporation. "As a result, CarMD reached out to our ASE-certified Master Tech committee to confirm the top 10 most damaging mistakes drivers make. We believe this information will help consumers save money in the long run and plan better as they care for what is often their second largest purchase."

Teens aloof with car maintenance

A survey by AutoMD.com showed that teenagers are more more likely to put off car maintenance. the survey indicated the 66 percent of parents rated their teens' car knowledge as "somewhat or complete clueless" or "average."

"Now is the perfect time to remind teens and their parents that driving and owning a vehicle is a big responsibility, and vehicle maintenance is a critical part of that responsibility," said Brian Hafer, vice president of marketing for AutoMD.com. "Our teen driver guide is designed to provide teens with basic information to start them on the road to a lifetime of responsible vehicle ownership."

AutoMD suggests that teens, and all car owners for that matter, should become familiar with their vehicle manual to know how to properly care for their car.

Car owners prefer independent shops to dealers for repairs

A recent survey shows that Americans trust independent auto repair shops over dealerships by a staggering amount.

According to the survey conducted by AutoMD.com, consumers admitted to be satisfied with a dealership experience but showed they trust independent repair shops twice as much as dealers. When it came down to it, better prices were what set independent repair shops apart from dealers.

Of the survey respondents, 80 percent indicated that they felt they were overcharged by their dealer, while 90 percent said they believe they could save at least 10 percent by visiting an independent shop. In fact, most auto owners who went to the dealership for service cited that it was only because their vehicle was under warranty or recall. Of the respondents who actually conducted price comparison between their dealer and independent shops, 87 percent said that the independent dealer's quotes were more affordable.

With Americans hanging onto their cars longer than ever before, it can save a lot of money down the road to take precautions in vehicle care now. Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats are the best way to keep a car's interior looking like the day it pulled off the lot. These liners keep spills off a carpet and out of the vehicle's doorsill, making cleaning easy and preserving the resale value of a car.

"It is no secret that consumers are holding onto their vehicles for record lengths of time, meaning more and more visits to the repair shop or dealer service center," said Brian Hafer, vice president of marketing for AutoMD.com. "We conducted this snapshot survey to provide a window into how today's car owners feel about their repair shop/dealership service center options, and found that price and relationships are making consumers push the independent trigger - unless their vehicle is under a dealership warranty. But, with so many aging cars now falling outside the warranty, this survey indicates that consumers are going to compare repair quotes - and then go where they believe the price is right."

Know a car's owners manual

In addition to saving money by having auto repairs done at an independent dealer and safeguarding a vehicle from damage, auto owners are encouraged to read their vehicle's owner's manual. There, they will see all maintenance information and decide whether a trip to an auto body shop is necessary. Many services, like topping off fluids or changing an air filter, can be done at home, saving on maintenance costs.

Safeguarding a car from winter weather conditions

As we come into the coldest temperatures of the year, it is a good idea car owners do everything possible to ensure their car will be up and running smoothly come spring time. Not only does extra protection leave a car running better but it also saves money in the long run. Car owners are encouraged to have maintenance done periodically on their vehicles.

The Engine Rebuilders Council recently reported that although many Americans believe a car is out of commission once the engine fails, for just the cost of a down payment on a new car, an engine repowering can offer year's of reliable use out of a vehicle.

"Harsh winter weather can be tough on a vehicle, but a damaged engine doesn't have to be the end of the car you love," said Ken Carter, chairman of the Engine Rebuilders Council. "Many vehicle owners may think their only option is to purchase a new vehicle when they experience severe engine trouble, but repowering is an economically and environmentally sound alternative that extends vehicle life and saves the cost of a new car."

Essentially what they do is take apart the entire engine, and either clean or rebuild all the products that need attention.

Tips to keeping a car up to par

In addition to engine protection during the winter months, anyone that's anyone uses Husky Liners® vehicle floor mats to keep the interior of their cars protected from snow and spills. Liners keep the liquid on the mat and off the car's carpet, not only keeping it fresh for spring driving, but also helping keep the resale value of a car high.

While Dan Woods, host and producer of Speed's Chop Cut Rebuild series, admitted to the Journal Sentinel that today's cars and trucks are more reliable than ever before, but the winter cold still wears on specific parts of the car.

"Still, certain systems in all vehicles are more susceptible to cold, snow and ice," Woods said. "It's important to prepare those systems to handle colder weather."

Drivers should always make sure the connections in the battery of the car are secure and that no moisture is causing them to erode. Not only can moisture affect the battery, but the cold automatically causes it to drain faster, so checking now could save you a cold walk to the gas station later on down the road.

Honda recognized for green cars

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy has recently recognized five Honda vehicles for their environmental sustainability.

"The recognition by ACEEE of Honda's alternative fuel and fuel-efficient vehicles over the past 15 years further validates our commitment to create and deliver more energy-efficient, low emissions mobility solutions for society," said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda Motor Co. "Honda's vision for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which is reflected in our environmental slogan of "Blue Skies for our Children," inspires us to lead and innovate in every aspect of our operations, from our product engineering and manufacturing practices to our upstream sales and service activities."

ACEEE issued the most coveted award of the greenest vehicles for 2013 to three Honda models. The Honda Fit EV, Insight and Civic Hybrid were all featured on ACEEE's list of the 12 most environmentally responsible vehicles available to consumers, accounting for the 15th consecutive year Honda has appeared on the list. The all-electric Honda Fit EV was named second on the list, while the Insight and Hybrid followed late down the line. The Fit EV received the designation as one of the greenest cars on the market primary for its EPA-estimated 118 MPGe fuel efficiency.

Auto owners not only looking to keep their fuel clean, but also the interior of their cars, should look into Husky Liners® vehicle floor mats.

ACEEE also named the Honda Fit and Odyssey minivan to its list of greener choices of 2013.

Recent research from Mintel indicated that alternative fuel vehicle sales were up 73 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.

In addition, the report showed there are nearly 440,000 hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles on the roads that were sold in 2012, as the number of plug-in and electric models have quadrupled over the past year.

Recent research from Mintel showed that the alternative fuel segment increased significantly in last year as experts anticipate continual growth.

According to Mintel sales of alternative fuel vehicles increased 73 percent on a year-over-year comparison. Colin Bird, automotive analyst at Mintel, said that the "live for today" mentality is gone and consumers are looking for protection and durability that can protect savings down the road.

"There is a new mentality that emphasizes preparing for and protecting against potential future disasters such as another oil shock or even just steadily rising prices at the pump," Bird added. "Hybrid and electric cars might be positioned to help consumers weather the storm of future spikes at the pump and they might be marketed as long-term investments that can help consumers protect against likely increases in gas prices. Messaging might be similar to advertisements for financial products, with the long-term savings on gasoline measured as 'returns.'"

A glimpse into the future: North American International Auto Show features high-strength steel in cars

The North American International Auto Show is currently underway, featuring the latest and greatest innovations the industry has to offer.

One technology that seems to sneak under the radar not only increases fuel efficiency and manufacturing costs associated with a vehicle, but also makes them safer. While many automakers are turning to hybrids and electric vehicles to meet federal regulations requiring increased fuel efficiency, others are turning to light weightmaterials that improve fuel efficiency. The government is requiring that automaker's' new fleet of vehicles must average54 miles to the gallon by 2025.

Ram featured its 2013 3500 pickup at this year's auto show, showing what high-strength steel has to offer the auto industry. According to Ram officials, the new 3500 can tow 7,000 more pounds when compared to the outgoing version of the car, because of high-strength steel.

Another automaker is currently implementing high-strength steel into production. The Ford F-150 pickup will soon be 250 to 750 pounds lighter with high-strength steel.

Any car owners might also want to consider another technology to keep the interior of their cars looking clean.Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats keep stains on the liner and off the car's carpet.

High-strength steel cheaper and safer

A recent report shows how high-strength steels are more cost effective than aluminum. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Mass Reduction for Light-Duty Vehicles for Model Years 2017-2025, high-strength steelsare the most cost effective material for automakers looking to lightweight vehicles.

Researchers showed that implementing the metal to the mid-size body, chassis and interior vehicle systems costs $0.46 per pound when using advanced high-strength steels, far lower than the $1.55 per pound to use aluminum.

"Cost models have traditionally associated a significant cost penalty with alternative materials and this NHTSA report confirms this while demonstrating advanced high-strength steels provide significant mass reduction at the lowest possible cost," said Lawrence Kavanagh, president, Steel Market Development Institute, a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute. "This is significant, as automakers have the challenging task of developing affordable vehicles that meet new and tightening regulations."

A separate study showed that not only is the material cheaper to use in the manufacturing of a vehicle but it is also safer.George Washington University verified the technology had an outstanding crash performance in simulated New Car Assessment Program, Frontal, Lateral Moving Deformable Barrier, and Lateral Pole tests, as well as the International Institute for Highway Safety's Roof, and Frontal Offset tests.

"This extraordinary safety performance is due to steel's unique ability to reinvent itself by continually expanding the range of properties and performance available to the auto design engineer," Kavanagh said.

BMW and VW are favorites to improve among automotive executives

It's one thing for an auto manufacturer to report on how well sales are doing or how "pretty" their latest model is, but it is an entirely different thing for executives of competing companies to show their optimism in their company's future. Well, that is exactly what a recent survey indicated.

The 14th Annual Global Automotive Executive Survey by KPMG showed that global car executives believe that Volkswagen and BMW are the most likely to increase in market share over the next five years.

"Volkswagen continues to be a powerhouse, with consistent market share gains in the U.S. and abroad," said Gary Silberg, national automotive industry leader for KPMG LLP. "It is very interesting to see a luxury brand like BMW jump into the second spot, a sign that the automaker's strategy and vehicles continue to impress the industry. The most noteworthy finding was the dramatic increase for Toyota, an illustration that the company is moving past the recalls and other issues of the past two years and looking to regain its prominent position among the global auto giants."

Both Volkswagen and BMW are coming off record setting sales years in 2012. Volkswagen reported sales of 9.07 million vehicles worldwide in 2012, accounting for an 11.2 percent increase over their 2011 record.

Whether you have a car or are looking to purchase one in the new year, carpets should never go without Husky Liners® car floor mats.

BMW reported sales of 1,845,186 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles worldwide, accounting for a 10.6 percent increase when compared to the automaker's previous record set in 2011.

"Our success can be attributed to our attractive model portfolio, the strength of our premium brands, as well as a strategy of balanced sales across all continents," said Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG. "We enter the new year with positive momentum and despite the prevailing headwinds in some markets, we aim to achieve another record year in sales in 2013. This year marks the beginning of a new era for the BMW Group, as we launch the all-electric BMW i3 towards the end of the year."

The recent survey also showed that faith in Hyundai to increase market share fell to 61 percent in 2013, down from 63 percent in 2012 and down from 72 percent in 2011. Toyota saw the largest jump in optimism by auto executives, of which 68 percent believe Toyota will increase in the next five years, up from 44 percent last year and 40 percent in 2011.

Python hunting season kicks off in Florida

The python hunting season recently kicked off in Southern Florida, attracting nearly 1,000 wranglers who have signed up to hunt the invasive species under the state's Python Challenge. The season will run through February 10

"If they'd told me 10-15 years ago, you're going to be cruising this road for Burmese pythons, I would've been like, 'You're crazy, no way,'" Ruben Ramirez, a python hunter who is registered for the Python Challenge, told Miami-DadeSunbeam Televisionaffiliate WSVN.

The 2013 Python Challenge looks to cut down on the overpopulated python population as the species, which can grow up to 25 feet long, is laying waste to the ecosystem and native wildlife of the Everglades. In addition, many of the species affected are endangered, and the pythons have fewpredators aside from humans and alligators. Under the Python Challenge, the competitor to catch the largest python gets $1,000 and the competitor who catches the most pythons gets $1,500.

The hunt already saw 11 kills in the first three days, with many more expected to come.

Those heading out for any hunting season this year, no matter how obscure, should look into equipping their vehicle with Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats to protect from unwanted damage to a car's interior.

Pythons are not the only reptile Florida hunters will be after. The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge recently announced that they are allowing 11 hunters to kill 22 alligators in an initial hunt.

Rolf Olsen, the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge's assistant manager said the hunt might begin as early as August and would occur during two different periods.

Acceptable methods of harvesting the alligators include harpoons, snatch hooks, gigs, spear guns and crossbows. Once the gators are caught, they will be killed with a bang stick, which is a pole with a shotgun charge at one end.

Iowa's 2012 hunting, fishing and camping numbers are in

The Department of Natural Resources recently released data describing Iowa's hunting , fishing and camping in 2012.

Any outdoor enthusiasts looking to provide a little extra protection to the interiors of their cars and trucks should install Husky Liners® floor mats.

The department reported selling 164,000 deer hunting licenses in 2012, with the most popular license being the first shotgun season. Bow license was the next popular by a slim margin. Iowa recently ended its pheasant hunting season and although numbers were down this year, 75 percent of out of state hunters come to Iowa for pheasant hunting season.

"When I started in 2004 the numbers were pretty high, we would got out opening week and check between 100 to 150 hunters on opening day, and most all of those hunters would have their limit of 3 birds," Iowa Conservation Officer Jeff Harrison, told Davenport NBC affiliate KWQC."A lot of them would come, it's a family tradition, they would get hotels, you would have take vacations based on coming back to do the pheasant opener."

As for fishing, the DNR reported selling 328,000 fishing licenses in 2012, only 10,000 of those were not for an annual license.

The DNR said that 2012 saw the largest increase in guest stays at state campgrounds, with campers spending 709,000 days at state campgrounds last year.

Kia this, Kia that

With the recent start of the North American International Auto Show, automakers have been releasing new models and receiving awards for models already out on the market. One of those brands is Kia. The company maintained strong sales in 2012 and looks for new vehicles to drive them forward in the new year.

Whether or not a vehicle is new or old, from 2014 or 1994, a car looks cleaner with Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats.

Kia unveiled its 2014 Cadenza sports sedan at the press days leading up to the Detroit Auto Show in Cobo Hall, adding to its lineup of award winning vehicles. According to company officials, the Cadenza will be available for purchase in the second quarter of this year, but pricing has not yet been made available.

"Since the introduction of the range-topping Optima SXL last year, we have seen an increasing number of customers in our retail outlets looking for a sedan with even more upscale amenities and technology," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA. "The Cadenza is the new flagship for Kia in the U.S. market, and when it goes on sale later this year, it will introduce a number of advanced systems that promise to set a new standard in the premium segment."

Kia also recently reported that it reached an all-time annual sales record in 2012 after delivering 557,599 units.

Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and KMMG, said the automaker is a completely different company from what it was just three years ago. The latest milestone, as well as new "world class' vehicles will continue to help the company in the new year.

In addition to the Cadenza, Kia is releasing the 2014 Kia Sorento this year. The foundation for Kia's future was helped along by the performance of models like the 2013 Optima.

Optima awarded at auto show

The 2013 Kia Optima was named the International Car of the Year by Road and Travel Magazine at the North American International Auto Show.

"We are thrilled that our best-selling Optima has earned the distinction of being named International Car of the Year by Road and Travel Magazine, further elevating its status in the midsize segment," said Sprague. "The Optima continues to attract new customers to the Kia brand by offering an impressive combination of design, performance, comfort and technology. All of this while still maintaining Kia's unmatched value proposition."

The new Optima has not been redesigned since the 2011 model year vehicle, but even with that being said, the older 2012 model showed a strong sales year in 2012, while picking up various awards including Sedan of the Year by Autobytel.com, 2012 Best New Car Value award by Kiplnger's Personal Fianance, a Best Buy by Consumers Digest and one of the Top Drives for 2012 by the Boston Globe. Furthermore, Kelley Blue Book reported earlier this month that the Kia Optima and Sorento were among the top 20 researched vehicles on their website in 2012.

"Jumping 19 spots from 2011 to 2012, the Optima's impressive increase in popularity on KBB.com this year proved that Kia has done a remarkable job sustaining interest in the model with clever advertising and new trim options, despite the fact that the Optima was not a new redesign in 2012," said Akshay Anand, market intelligence Web analyst for Kelley Blue Book.

With the overall recovery of the auto industry in 2012, along with a clever business strategy and high quality models of the future, Kias recent awards have been earned and will drive growth moving forward.

"Car fans worldwide are eager to catch a good look at the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, and the 2014 Cadillac ELR Coupe, based on the Chevrolet Volt, will become the first extended-range electric vehicle from GM's luxury division. Meanwhile, Infiniti will debut its new Q50 replacement for the G37, and Lexus will add a new IS into the entry-level luxury mix."

Nerad added that as for concept vehicles, the Honda Urban Vehicle Concept should offer an insight on what the future small crossover vehicles might look like, while the BMW 4 Series gives another look into how production might one day look.

Any auto owners looking to keep their cars looking as clean as the day they bought them should consider HuskyLiners® vehicle floor mats.

Ram 1500 given award at auto show

The Ram 1500 was recently named the 2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year by a panel of automotive experts at the North American International Auto Show.

"For the Ram Truck Brand, this ranks as one of the proudest days in our history," said Fred Diaz , president and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group LLC. "Every truck-maker aspires to win the North American Truck/Utility of the Year. I tip my hat to the folks who worked behind the scenes to make the 2013 Ram 1500 a technological triumph."

Diaz added that no other truck offers best in class fuel economy, with the performance of the vehicle's Pentastar and HEMI engines.

Navigation systems not satisfying in 2012

The recently published J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study showed that consumer satisfaction in car navigation systems decreased in 2012 on a year-over-year comparison, as the industry sees increased competition from mobile applications offering navigation services.

Mike VanNieuwkuyk, executive director of global automotive at J.D. Power and Associates said manufacturers of these systems face a serious challenge going forward as smartphone usage sees increases in usage among vehicle owners. He added that the a familiar interface and free apps have encouraged many to shift to smartphones for their navigation services.

The challenge is for automakers to improve their current platforms by adapting to the new trend by implementing smartphones in innovative ways. Currently, consumer expectations of navigation services have not been met, as a seamless system between either navigation systems or automakers has not been made to include smart phones.

"We're seeing a demand from owners for connectivity with not only other in-vehicle systems, but also their own equipment and smartphone," VanNieuwkuyk added. "Navigation systems are no longer viewed as a stand-alone component, but as part of a media, safety and infotainment package, and are expected to seamlessly work together, but in many cases are falling short of owner expectations."

According to the report, auto owners downloaded mobile technology 47 percent of the time in 2012 when it came to their navigation services, up 10 percent from 2011.

Consumer satisfaction in navigation systems dropped across all areas measured in the survey, including routing, screen accessibility, speed of the system, voice directions and voice activation. Navigation user satisfaction was 681 in 2012, on a 1,000 point scale, down from 694 in 2011.

Car owners looking for satisfaction in a product for their cars should look into HuskyLiners® vehicle floor mats.

Automakers receiving recognition for technology
While there is much expectation for mobile offering in vehicles in the new year, the auto industry is celebrating past technology advances. Green Car Journal's Green Car Technology Award will be given out at the Washington Auto Show on January 31.

Ten nominations have already been given out but only one technology can win. The winner will be named based on its ability to create a new generation in fuel efficiency, alternative fuel or low emissions. Due to the auto show's location, Robert Fogarty said that these technologies not only help the community but could also influence governmental policy decisions.

Ram 3500: All others are Hot Wheels toys

The new 2013 Ram 3500 makes its competitors look like Hot Wheels toys. Ram recently released its 2013 Heavy Duty pickups and Chassis Cab trucks towing and weight ratings and they are a doozy.

According to the data, the Ram 3500 Heavy Duty has a maximum trailer weight of 30,000 pounds. The next in line competitor might as well be a tricycle because it only has a maximum trailer weight of 23,100 pounds. The Detroit Free Press added that the new Ram successfully added 7,000 pounds of trailer weight when compared to the 2012 Ram 3500.

In addition, the Gross Combined Weight Rating of the 3500 is 37,600 pounds. The next closest competitor only has a GCWR of 30,500 pounds.

"We built the new 2013 Ram Heavy Duty to be the undisputed Heavy Duty 'King of the Road,'"  said Fred Diaz, president and CEO - Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group. "These new rigs deliver on the number one key attribute most critical to these customers: uncompromising capability. Towing capability, reliability and engine performance are ranked first through third, respectively, with HD customers."

Diaz added that the 2013 Ram Heavy Duty trucks deliver all the above things, while offering a very low total cost of ownership. The truck is set to go on sale this spring.

All that weight and towing capacity is supported by the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, which gets 850 pound-feet of torque and a new steel frame, with a strength rating of 50,000 pounds per square inch.

Any truck, especially one as rugged as the 3500, cannot be complete without installing Husky Liners® custom fit floor mats to its interior. No matter how tough the job is on a car, floor mats will keep it looking clean.

Ram has also received the tip of the cap from many sources for its 1500 truck. Motor Trend, AOL Autos, the Detroit Free Press and most recently Four Wheeler Magazine have all dubbed the 2013 Ram 1500 as the Truck of Year.

"Pickup Truck of the Year from Four Wheeler Magazine recognizes the engineering efforts put forth to mold the new 2013 Ram 1500 and we're honored to carry the title," Diaz said. "A large percentage of our customers are outdoor enthusiasts, making this award very well-received in a fiercely competitive truck market."

Consumers want connected cars

A recent survey for Johnson Controls by Harris Interactive showed that vehicle owners want to be able to connect their phones and applications to their car, in a safe and simple manner, where they can also download apps from traditional channels.

"Through this research study, we gain important insight into the needs and wants of consumers as they seek to connect seamlessly and intuitively to their vehicles," said Paul Lambert, group vice president and general manager, Electronics, Johnson Controls Electronics & Interiors. "This information is helping us to provide market-leading infotainment solutions that take into account ever-increasing consumer electronics functionality without sacrificing safety."

The survey, of more than 2,100 U.S. adults showed that 84 percent of people would like to control features in their car through a touchscreen infotainment system, while 83 percent want the vehicle's infotainment system to receive wireless updates. In addition, 75 percent of survey respondents said that safety is the most important feature in the selection vehicle. Of the respondents, 76 percent would like to be able to connect to the internet using their car as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Surveys like these help the automotive industry determine what consumers want and how they can effectively implement technologies in cars. Those looking to improve their cars even further should install Husky Liners® vehicle floor mats, to keep the interior of a car looking like the technologically advanced machine it really is.

Ask and you shall receive
Car owners won't have to wait long for internet in their cars, as Audi announced the same day the results of the above study were released that it is unveiling the 2013 Audi A3 with 4G LTE wireless connectivity at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

To make the technology possible, Audi teamed up with Qualcomm Technologies, to equip its A3 with the Gobi 3G/4G chipset, MDM9215.

"We hope to introduce to automobiles the same 4G LTE connectivity that Qualcomm brought to today's leading smartphones and mobile computing devices," said Kanwalinder Singh, senior vice president of business development, Qualcomm Technologies. "The capabilities of the MDM9215 chipset allows Audi to define a new in-car media experience, including viewing and interacting with content on the head unit as well as on passengers' own Wi-Fi-connected smartphones and tablets, all at 4G LTE speeds."

The technology will allow passengers to connect up to eight devices to the internet, using the car as a mobile hotspot. The system will allow them to receive real-time weather, travel information and navigation.

Ford F-Series sell like hot cakes in 2012

According to Autoblog.com, the Ford F-Series was the best selling selling vehicle in 2012, accounting for 31 consecutive years of leading the automotive industry in annual sales. Autoblog recently released its list of the top selling cars in 2012 and there were no surprises as the top three vehicles sold in 2012 were also the top three vehicles sold in 2011.

In 2012, Ford sold 645,316 F-Series trucks, no where near the 900,000+ units sold in 2001, 2004 and 2005, but well above the No.2 selling Chevrolet Silverado, which sold 418,312 units in 2012. The Toyota Camry was surprisingly close to overtaking the Silverado at the No. 2 spot, as 404,886 units were sold in 2012, however, with the release of the all-new Silverado coming in 2013, this might have been Camry's year to overtake Chevrolet.

Those looking to keep the interiors of their car looking clean should install HuskyLiners® vehicle floor mats, as they keep stains off the carpet and on the liner for an easy clean.

Ford sales strong in 2012
Ford reported earlier in the month that sales grew across all segments during 2012. The automaker said that  sales of cars were up 5 percent, utilities were up 7 percent and trucks were up 2 percent on a year-over-year comparison.

"Ford finished 2012 strong, with retail sales showing improved strength as more customers returned to dealer showrooms," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service.

Ram 1500 named Truck of the Year, again

Not to, as they say, flog a dead horse, but it has happened again. The new 2013 Ram 1500 has been named the Truck of the Year.

This time it was AOL Autos placing the Ram 1500 on top of all other trucks. AOL editors had a chance to test drive and report on every new truck, car and SUV, to provide an unbiased insight into the best wheels on the market.

Potential car buyers looking to purchase the best vehicles on the market should protect them with the leading car mats on the market. HuskyLiners® custom fit floor mats will protect a car's interior from potentially damaging spills.

David Kiley, chief automotive editor of AOL Autos, said their job of separating "the wheat from the chaff" has never been more difficult as the quality of new trucks has never been better, but when all was said and done, the Ram 1500 was the "hands down" leader in trucks.

The Ram 1500 totes best-in-class fuel economy with 25 miles to the gallon, improved technology and features, without sacrificing on performance. The automaker places fuel efficiency at the top of innovations in the truck by including engine options of the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or the Pentastar V-6, providing consumers with the best in powertrains.

"We're extremely pleased that AOL Autos, a well-known source for automotive information, has deemed the 2013 Ram 1500 as their choice for Truck of the Year," said Fred Diaz, president and CEO Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico, Chrysler Group. "A recommendation from AOL is fantastic news for our dealers and customers, and further recognizes Ram Truck for delivering uncompromising high quality, capability and technology."

Other publications showing Ram 1500 respect
Both Motor Trend and the Detroit Free Press announced last month that the 2013 Ram 1500 is the Truck of the Year.

"We had a small but solid field of contenders for Motor Trend's Truck of the Year," said Edward Loh, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend. "But in the end, the choice was clear: Ram 1500 not only withstood our rigorous testing, it impressed at every step along the way. Our judges were won over by the performance of Ram 1500's broad array of standard and optional equipment."

Both Motor Trend and the Detroit Free Press applauded the 1500 for its technological and interior advancements, as well as its fuel efficiency.

Green Technology Award nominees named

The Washington Auto Show on January 31, is giving automakers a chance to showcase some of their latest models, allowing event goers to see the latest innovations within the industry.

Finalists have recently been named for the Green Car Journal's inaugural Green Car Technology Award, which will be announced on the second day of the Washington Auto Show. Ten technologies have been nominated but only one can win. The vehicle with the best technology creating a next generation in fuel efficiency, alternative fuel or low emissions will receive the coveted award.

Whether your car is green, blue or pink, you should consider equipping its interior with HuskyLiners® vehicle floor mats. Liners are engineered to keep spills off a carpet and out of the cracks of a car.

New technologies nominated for the Green Technology Award include advanced powerplants and drivetrain components that increase efficiency, reduce the use of petroleum and improve environmental impact.

"The Washington Auto Show is the perfect forum for The Green Car Technology Award," said Washington Auto Show Chairman Robert Fogarty. "As the automotive industry's Policy Show, we are committed to showcasing advancements in eco-friendly systems, alternative fuel engines and other clean air technologies to both our customer community and the policy makers who represent our industry on Capitol Hill. We are honored to have the opportunity to host the nominees and winners for this important award's inaugural year."

One technology up for the award is the EcoBoost offering in certain Ford vehicles. The direct injection system and turbocharging allows vehicles to achieve 20 percent better fuel economy when compared to conventional gasoline engines.

Ford recently posted sales gains across all segments, partially due to this technology. Jim Farley, Ford's executive vice president, global marketing, sales and service said their wide range of EcoBoost engines, including the 1.0-liter in small cars to the fuel efficient 3.5 liter in the capable F-series pickup, are what helped increase sales in 2012.

Auto industry celebrates hot sales year

The automotive industry took a hit during the recession as many Americans couldn't afford to purchase a new car following the economic downturn. However, by forgoing a new car purchase in recent years, many are contributing to the increased demand for new vehicles.

With 2012 coming to a close, many automaker's are reeling as final sales numbers are being posted. The pent-up demand for cars following the recession caused many Americans to make automotive purchases in 2012 and Chrysler is one automaker that saw gains as a result.

Chrysler sales increased 21 percent in 2012, beating out the industry projected increase of 13 percent.

"Chrysler Group ended 2012 on a strong note with December sales up 10 percent and our best December sales since 2007," said Reid Bigland, president and CEO – Dodge Brand and head of U.S. Sales. "Looking back on 2012, we were again one of the fastest growing automakers in the country with total sales up 21 percent. We also recorded 33-consecutive months of year-over-year sales growth and our strongest annual sales in five years.

Bigland added that seven of the automaker's vehicles recorded their best ever annual sales in 2012 showing how quality, design and fuel efficiency of the entire line up have resonated with consumers.

In addition, Chrysler posted its largest December sales number since 2007, marking the 33rd consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. In particular, the Fiat brand was up 59 percent in December 2012 compared to December 2011, and the Dodge brand was up 26 percent during that same period.

Those who recently purchased a vehicle or are considering one in the near future should equip their cars with HuskyLiners® custom fit floor mats, to keep their new cars clean in order to ensure their resale value high for later down the road.

Chrysler was not the only automaker seeing the benefits from pent-up demand within the industry. Ford reported growth across all segments in 2012. The automaker said sales of cars were up 5 percent, utilities were up 7 percent and trucks were up 2 percent in 2012 on a year-over-year comparison.

"Ford finished 2012 strong, with retail sales showing improved strength as more customers returned to dealer showrooms," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

Porsche also reported it sold 35,043 vehicles in 2012, up from the 29,023 sold in 2011.

Ohio muzzleloader season starts January 5

Ohio's deer muzzleloader season is set to kick off on January 5 and will last until January 8. State officials anticipate that production levels during the weekend will be similar to last year when 19,459 deer were harvested, the Mansfield News Journal reported.

During Ohio's deer-gun weekend in 2012, hunters harvested more than 14,000 deer, down 14.3 percent from 2011. According to the Ohio Department of Natural resources Division of Wildlife, the state's hunters have harvested 188,853 so far this 2012-2013 season. Coshocton County leads the harvest numbers in Ohio so far, followed by Licking, Tuscarawas, Muskingum and Guernsey.

“The overall size of the herd is smaller, and the harvest is aligned with that decrease,” said Mike Tonkavich, ODNR project leader. “We anticipated that the 2012-13 deer season harvest would be down 5 to 10 percent from last year.”

Those heading out for the muzzleloader hunting weekend are reminded to equip their trucks HuskyLiners® mud flaps.

Harvest numbers are also down in Tennessee as the state's Wildlife Resources agency indicated that 162,750 deer were harvested through New Year's Day. While officials expect this year's harvest numbers to exceed last years 167,814, they do not anticipate it will be the record 2006 year when 182,093 deer were harvested.

IIHS names auto industry's safest rides

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently named the safest cars in the automotive industry. The organization released its full list of 117 vehicles that earned Top Safety Pick awards, as well as 13 additional models that received the latest Top Safety Pick+ designation.

Those considering purchasing one of these vehicles are advised to outfit them with HuskyLiners® vehicle floor mats in order to keep the ride looking as clean as the day the ignition was first turned.

The IIHS evaluates a vehicle on various crash tests, issuing a rating of good, acceptable, marginal or poor. In order to qualify as a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must receive a rating of good on the IIHS moderate overlap frontal test, side impact, rollover and rear tests.

"Models that earn Top Safety Pick also offer outstanding protection in many crashes," Lund says. "These vehicles are much safer choices than most vehicles on the market just five years ago."

In 2012, however, the IIHS created the Top Safety Pick+ award, introducing the small overlap frontal crash. Along with evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries and rear impacts, a vehicle must receive a rating of good or better all four of the five crash tests, including the latest small overlap test, and must receive a rating of acceptable on the fifth test. The small overlap test replicates what happens to a vehicle's front end when it collides with another vehicle, a tree or a utility pole.

Lund said that in response to the newest evaluation, the IIHS has now seen automakers implement structural and restraint alterations to better meet their requirements. He added that five manufacturers redesigned their midsize cars to enhance protection in the small overlap test.

The 13 cars that received the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation include: Acura TL; Dodge Avenger and its twin, the Chrysler 200 4-door; Ford Fusion; Honda Accord 2-door; Honda Accord 4-door; Kia Optima; Nissan Altima 4-door; Subaru Legacy and its twin, the Subaru Outback; Suzuki Kizashi; Volkswagen Passat and Volvo S60.

For the fourth consecutive year the IIHS has named all Subaru models to be Top Safety Picks. In addition the Subaru Forester and Legacy earned the Top Safety Pick+ designation.

"The Subaru safety story begins right from the inception of every Subaru vehicle," said Shiro Ohta, president and CEO of Subaru Canada. "We are very pleased that the IIHS has recognized us again as the only manufacturer with 2013 Top Safety Picks for all models."

Car sales to be high in 2013, large truck segment to grow

After posting a strong sales year, the automotive industry is poised for a similar showing in 2013, one firm predicts.

Polk, a leading global automotive intelligence firm, anticipates that new light vehicle registrations will increase 6.6 percent to 15.3 million vehicles in 2013 when compared 2012. In addition, the group believes North American production volumes will reach 15.9 million units, accounting for a 2.4 percent increase on a year-over-year comparison.

After finally reaching a budget deficit decision, Washington has led the industry to believe the economy will continue to grow, as automakers increase production capabilities throughout the region. Analysts from Polk do not, however, expect sales levels to reach their height before the recession.

"Polk expects continued recovery in the industry in 2013 and 2014, a positive sign for the U.S. economy," said Anthony Pratt, director of forecasting for the Americas at Polk. "The auto sector is likely to continue to be one of the key sectors that lead the U.S. economic recovery; however, we don't expect to realize pre-recession levels in the 17 million vehicles range for many years."

While Polk predicts the midsize vehicle segment will continue to lead sales during 2013, they do expect that large trucks, after five years of declines, will likely grow as automakers showcase new trucks in 2013 and 2014. General Motors, Toyota and Ford are all planning on releasing redesigned trucks in the next 18 to 24 months.

Ram 1500 leads the way in 2013
The Ram 1500 is one truck that will help revitalize the large truck segment. Motor Trend, and more recently, Mark Phelan, a writer for the Detroit Free Press, named the Ram 1500 as the 2013 Truck of the Year.

The Ram 1500 is one truck that will help revitalize the large truck segment. Motor Trend, and more recently, Mark Phelan, a writer for the Detroit Free Press, named the Ram 1500 as the 2013 Truck of the Year.
